LIMPOPO
ELIM
HOSPITAL
Elim Hospital
is a rural hospital in the Limpopo province, 25 km east of Louis
Trichardt and 125 km away from Pietersburg. It is a community hospital,
also rendering district ophthalmic services and having a small (4
bedded) ICU. There are a total of about 400 beds, divided between,
Medicine, General surgery and Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Gynaecology,
a Maternity Unit and an ophthalmic unit.
Linked to the
hospital there are 2 health centres and 27 clinics, which the hospital
staff visit regularly.
It is an intern
training institute and a rural training institute for Wits 4th and
6th year medical students, physio students and OT students. It used
to be a pharmacy intern training institute until recently; the pharmacy
has
moved into new premises and we are awaiting accreditation for training
from the Pharmacy Council.
The Limpopo
province provides a wonderful training experience. The environment
is very tranquil, picturesque, with a lot of opportunity to explore
nature. The people are very friendly unlike the cities. The hospital
is about 100km away from the Punda Maria Gate of the Kruger National
Park.
Medical Students
in their clinical years, pharmacy students and students in OT &
physio will be accepted. There are often several overseas applicants
as well, but priority is usually given to local university students.
In order to
ensure that training is optimal it is requested that prospective
students apply in writing to the Medical Superintendent, Private
Bag X312, Elim Hospital 0960, or by fax to 015 5563160 or by e-mail
to me, Dr S.P. Lakhana, on lakhanas@dhw.norprov.gov.za.
